Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel

Bring plenty of Quartz Flasks with you.

snap3Mission packs have a tendency of notching up the difficulty, since usually it’s the hardcore fans who will go the extra mile of buying them. So is the case with Hexen’s Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, which presents levels that are several orders of magnitude tougher than the original Hexen. Enemies are more numerous, traps are deadlier, the levels are harder to figure out (which is to say you face more complex key puzzles) and the health pick-ups are merely enough to keep you from dying – and all this on the standard difficulty model.

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be anything actually new here outside of the tougher packet of non-linear levels. The weapons are the same, although are less effective with the onslaught of monstrous hordes this time, and the enemies are still threatening only by virtue of their numbers rather than sharp wit (hey, it’s still a Doom game after all). The singleplayer spans twenty levels through three hubs, with a further six levels provided exclusively for deathmatch. Standard emulators used to run Deathkings of the Dark Citadel include Zdoom – just paste the .wad file in the same folder and off you go!
